Veteran Digital Media Leader Richard Gingras Named Chair of Village Media Board

Village Media, the digital-first local news company behind this community website, has named Richard Gingras as the new chair of its board of directors.

A pioneer in online journalism, Gingras brings nearly 50 years of experience to the role. Most recently, he served as Google’s global Vice President of News, where he led the company’s efforts to support high-quality journalism worldwide and explored sustainable models for the industry’s future.

Gingras, known for his wit and dedication to digital innovation, often jokes that he’s been in the business “since the days of steam-powered modems.” His trailblazing journey began in 1979 when he helped launch the first interactive online news magazine using broadcast teletext in collaboration with CBS, NBC, and PBS.

Since then, he’s held a series of influential roles, including founder and CEO of MediaWorks, a leader in early news-agenting technology; lead designer of Apple’s eWorld; and a key figure in the development of Salon.com, one of the internet’s first major news platforms.

“Richard’s deep expertise in digital media and his unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity align perfectly with Village Media’s mission,” said Jeff Elgie, CEO of Village Media. “He’s been a mentor to me and a passionate supporter of local news. His leadership will be a tremendous asset as we continue to expand and innovate.”

Headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Village Media operates 26 local news sites across the province, along with The Trillium at Queen’s Park and ParliamentToday in Ottawa. The company is committed to delivering high-quality, factual community journalism that is always free and hyper-local.

“I’m honoured to take on this role,” said Gingras. “Village Media’s commitment to empowering communities through strong local journalism is more important now than ever. I look forward to supporting their mission and exploring new ways to innovate in local news delivery.”

Gingras also holds board positions with organizations like the First Amendment Coalition, the International Center for Journalists, the UC Berkeley School of Journalism, and PRX. He helped launch the Center for News, Technology & Innovation and The Trust Project, both of which promote transparency and trust in journalism.

While continuing to serve as a senior advisor at Google, the California-based media leader will now help guide Village Media’s strategic direction as it continues to grow its impact in communities across Canada.

In a recent keynote speech at Columbia University, Gingras emphasized the essential role of credible, fact-based reporting in an increasingly polarized world — a message that aligns closely with Village Media’s mission.
