The Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) has been a beacon of community support for 25 years, amassing an impressive $1.1 million through its annual collectibles auction. However, change is in the air as the auxiliary shifts gears, replacing its traditional auction with an exciting new venture: a marketplace and estate sale.
Scheduled to take place at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church, located at 662 Guelph Line in Burlington, the event promises to be a treasure trove for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Mark your calendars for Friday, May 3, from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as this two-day extravaganza showcases a diverse range of antiques, collectibles, and sought-after items generously donated by community members.
Susan Mickalow, a dedicated auxiliary volunteer, enthusiastically shared details about the upcoming sale, highlighting the array of offerings that include china, crystal, silver, figurines, artwork, linens, jewelry, furniture, and much more.
Moira McEachern, a seasoned member of the JBH auxiliary auction committee, explained the transition from traditional auctions to this novel fundraising approach. She expressed optimism about the new venture, emphasizing its role as part of the auxiliary’s multifaceted fundraising initiatives supporting various hospital campaigns.
Over the past quarter-century, proceeds from the auctions have been instrumental in acquiring vital hospital equipment and supporting critical campaigns. These include surgical lights for operating rooms, ultrasounds for the Intensive Care Unit, specialty stretchers for the Emergency Unit, patient monitors for multiple departments, ICU transport monitors, vital signs monitors, pain medication pumps, chemotherapy chairs, and patient care units for the cancer clinic.
Established in 1959, The Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Hospital predates the hospital itself, reflecting its deep-rooted commitment to the community’s well-being. The auxiliary’s ongoing dedication is evident in its pivotal role in the hospital’s development and expansion projects. In a landmark move in January 2012, the auxiliary pledged an astounding $5 million towards Joseph Brant’s redevelopment and expansion, marking the largest single donation in the hospital’s history.
The auxiliary’s fundraising efforts extend beyond auctions, encompassing revenue generation from various businesses and initiatives, including the hospital’s on-site Tim Hortons and gift shop. This innovative spirit and unwavering dedication underscore the auxiliary’s invaluable contribution to Joseph Brant Hospital’s continued growth and excellence.
The transition from auctions to a marketplace and estate sale signifies not just a change in strategy, but a testament to adaptability and resilience in fundraising. As the community rallies around this new initiative, it reinforces the enduring spirit of generosity and collaboration that defines The Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Hospital.
