Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc. is set to mark its 50th anniversary with a remarkable lineup for the 2024-2025 season, promising a treat for devoted theatregoers.
A Rich History of Musical Theatre in Burlington
Established as the Burlington Light Opera Society, Drury Lane Theatrical Productions has evolved into Burlington’s premier musical theatre company over five decades. From its humble beginnings with Gilbert & Sullivan comic light operas, the company transitioned to staging Broadway musicals, leading to a name change in 1984 to better reflect its productions. Rick Mackenzie, Vice-President and Director of Marketing, reminisces about the journey: “Our company has produced over 150 musicals across various venues, culminating in our current home on the corner of New Street and Drury Lane, affectionately known as the ‘Loft’.”
Innovation in Theatre Space
Despite its intimate capacity of 138, Drury Lane has crafted a space known for its versatility in showcasing both classic and new musicals. Mackenzie notes the challenges posed by the smaller venue but praises the team’s innovative spirit in staging large-scale productions: “We’ve had to be creative in our approach, employing minimalist designs to adapt to our space.”
A Theatre of Fond Memories
For long-time member Rick Mackenzie, Drury Lane holds a special place, not only for its theatrical productions but for personal connections as well. Mackenzie fondly recalls meeting his wife Carol at the theatre and cherishes the friendships forged over the years: “In our retirement, my wife and I are deeply involved in the leadership of this theatre family.”
A Glance at the 50th Anniversary Season
The upcoming season promises a diverse lineup, including the Irving Berlin classic musical, Holiday Inn, a Christmas pantomime Beauty & The Beast, the annual Music Hall Variety show, and A Gentleman’s Guide To Love & Murder. Mackenzie emphasizes the careful curation of the program, aiming to inspire both actors and audiences alike.
Community Engagement and Support
Drury Lane’s commitment extends beyond the stage, actively engaging with the Burlington community through various initiatives. From charity performance nights to fundraisers like Pink Night Burlington, the company strives to make a meaningful impact on societal and cultural fronts.
Passing the Torch
As Drury Lane celebrates its 50th anniversary, Mackenzie is delighted to witness a surge in young talent joining the fold. Reflecting on the company’s legacy, he emphasizes the importance of passing down early-year highlights to ensure a solid foundation for the next generation of musical theatre enthusiasts.
Drury Lane Productions Inc. stands as a testament to the enduring power of theatre, enriching the cultural landscape of Burlington for half a century and beyond.
