Art Gallery of Burlington Celebrates 50 Years with Weeklong Festivities

Events include exhibitions, a Gala, a Block Party, and a tribute to the Gallery’s rich legacy

The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in grand style this May, hosting a vibrant series of events from May 8 to 13.

The festivities will feature a Gala Dinner, a lively Block Party, spring exhibition openings, and a special AGB Day Declaration — all marking half a century of artistic excellence and community connection.

“With pride and reflection, we celebrate a monumental milestone: our 50th Anniversary,” said Executive Director Emma Sankey. “It all began in May 1975, when the Burlington Cultural Centre opened its doors as a beacon of creativity, thanks to the vision and passion of our founders.” Sankey expressed excitement about continuing AGB’s mission to create an accessible and welcoming arts space for the Burlington community and beyond.

The 50th Anniversary theme, We Dig Culture, reflects the spirit of hands-on community involvement that shaped the Gallery’s origins. In 1975, supporters wore “I Dig Culture” shirts to rally behind the center’s creation. Today, that same spirit fuels AGB’s commitment to celebrating Canadian arts and culture, especially through its distinguished collection of contemporary ceramics.

“The Art Gallery of Burlington has evolved into a vibrant hub offering thought-provoking exhibitions, educational experiences, and public programs designed to build lasting connections,” Sankey added.

The celebrations will officially kick off on May 8 with the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., held in the Rotary Shoreline Banquet Room. Guests will enjoy a Courtyard Reception featuring oysters and sparkling wine, a three-course meal by Millcroft Catering, a keynote speech from Gail Lord — President and Co-Founder of Lord Cultural Resources — a live auction, and live music.

The Gala is generously sponsored by Smith’s Funeral Home, Lawrie Insurance Group, and North Shore Wealth Management, with in-kind support from Special Event Rentals, Laila’s Cheesecake Co., and Jake’s Grill and Oyster House.
