A family’s cat was saved thanks to quick action from Burlington firefighters after a devastating blaze on Mount Forest Drive Saturday morning.

The fire, which broke out around 10:30 a.m., left one home severely damaged and threatened a neighboring house.

Responding crews encountered heavy smoke and intense flames that spread into the attic of the adjoining home. The fire was so fierce that part of the roof collapsed, requiring more than three hours to bring it under control. Burlington Fire Department Chief Karen Roche confirmed that the fire caused over $1 million in damages and noted that the affected house may be a total loss.

In addition to rescuing the cat, firefighters secured three dogs in the backyard and brought in a vacuum truck to remove over six feet of water that had accumulated in the basement during the firefighting efforts. A transit bus was provided to shelter displaced residents, and multiple vehicles, including two aerial trucks and seven fire engines, were deployed to manage the emergency. Oakville Fire Department also sent a truck to help cover Burlington during the incident.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.
