In response to the devastating ice storm that struck Ontario on March 29 and 30, Burlington Hydro quickly mobilized its crews to assist in the restoration of power in the hardest-hit communities. Although Burlington itself was relatively unscathed by the storm, the local hydro crews were kept busy supporting efforts in other affected areas.
According to a press release from Burlington Hydro on April 4, the storm caused widespread damage, with trees and power lines covered in ice, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers across the province without power. The challenging conditions, including blocked roads, fallen trees, and lingering ice, slowed down recovery efforts.
Burlington Hydro responded by sending two crews and three vehicles to help Lakeland Power in Huntsville and Bracebridge, areas that were severely impacted by the storm. This assistance is part of the long-standing tradition of mutual support among Ontario’s utilities, coordinated through the Ontario Mutual Assistance Group. Burlington Hydro is proud to contribute to this collective effort to restore power to affected communities.
As recovery efforts continue, Burlington Hydro remains committed to assisting its industry partners and ensuring that power services are restored as quickly as possible.
Gerry Smallegange, president and CEO of Burlington Hydro, expressed pride in the response from the utility’s crews. “Storm recovery of this scale is incredibly demanding, and it’s heartening to see our employees rise to the occasion. Their expertise, dedication, and willingness to step up at a moment’s notice demonstrate the core values of Burlington Hydro and the strong partnerships within Ontario’s energy sector.”
Burlington Hydro serves more than 68,000 residential and business customers in the city, providing reliable electricity distribution services.
