The Role of CNFS in Shaping Healthcare for Francophones
Chanelle Landriault, Manager of CNFS at Laurentian University, emphasizes the organization’s mission: “Our mandate is to enhance access to quality French-language healthcare services for Francophone minority communities outside Quebec. We work to ensure students have access to training in healthcare programs such as Nursing, Social Service, and Orthophony in Northern Ontario.”
With 16 partner institutions across Canada offering French-language healthcare programs, CNFS plays a critical role in supporting Francophone students as they pursue careers in health and work to fill a gap in the healthcare workforce. Landriault highlights the unique value of these programs: “By pursuing a healthcare career in French, students not only enhance their own future but contribute directly to improving patient outcomes in their communities.”
Opening Doors to Career Opportunities
Entering the healthcare field is no small feat. It requires years of study, intense training, and practical experience. For Francophone students, however, there are additional hurdles, including access to the right resources, clinical placements, and career guidance. CNFS is dedicated to helping students overcome these obstacles through various support initiatives, including bursaries, mentorship, and hands-on opportunities to gain real-world experience.
“We celebrate the dedication of students committed to strengthening French-language healthcare services,” says Landriault. “Through financial support and access to critical resources, we empower students to succeed. This includes providing educational tools, research opportunities, and assistance for clinical placements that might require travel or relocation.”
Moreover, CNFS is actively involved in the professional development of these students. Events such as workshops with healthcare professionals allow students to expand their networks and gain insights into potential career pathways, ensuring they are ready to thrive in their fields upon graduation.

Landriault explains, “Effective communication is essential to quality healthcare. When patients are able to communicate in their first language, they are more confident, better informed, and ultimately more involved in their own healthcare decisions. CNFS is committed to ensuring Francophone patients have access to healthcare professionals who understand their language and culture.”
