Brews and Runs: Burlington Beer Runners Blend Fitness with Fun

Balance is key in life, so why not strike it with a refreshing beer after a workout? That’s precisely the ethos driving the Burlington Beer Runners, a group that has been combining exercise with social enjoyment since January 2023.

A Casual Approach to Fitness and Friendship

Every week, the Beer Runners convene at Nickel Brook Brewery on Mainway, where they engage in physical activity and unwind over a cold one afterward. This inclusive group welcomes participants of all levels, from avid runners with their canine companions to those who prefer a leisurely walk.

Organizer Mallory Welch emphasizes the group’s laid-back nature, stating, “I’ve tried to keep it as casual as possible.” She acknowledges the challenges of juggling commitments, so there’s no pressure for strict attendance. Even on days when she’s unavailable, her husband Zach steps in to lead the pack.

Community and Comradery on the Road

The weekly runs, typically on Thursday nights, attract around 10 participants, with a core group of four regulars ensuring a consistent turnout. Rather than focusing solely on intense training, the emphasis is on creating an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Welch notes occasional speed bursts by familiar faces and the formation of smaller groups during runs to accommodate varying paces. Safety is paramount, especially for newcomers, as the group navigates a 5k loop through neighborhood trails before returning to Nickel Brook Brewery.

Refreshment and Revelry at Nickel Brook

Post-run, the group gathers at the brewery, where Nickel Brook’s offerings, particularly their IPAs and the paloma beer, are popular choices among the runners. The brewery’s support is evident with discounted prices for the group, fostering a welcoming environment for sweaty yet satisfied participants.

Welch highlights the camaraderie, saying, “We usually find a good spot where we can all pull up a chair,” noting the added delight of summertime patio sessions.

For those intrigued by this blend of fitness and fellowship, the Burlington Beer Runners extend an open invitation.
